The Sunday Guide - September

The Sunday Guide - September

INSPIRATION STATEMENT

“There is a time in late September when the leaves are still green and the days are still warm, but somehow you know that it is all about to end; as if summer was holding it’s breath, and when it lets it out again, it was Autumn.”
The recent rains brought out that oh-so-familiar smell of sweet, wet leaves–brown from August's heat. That smell that tells you it's all about to change.
While we tend to get that feeling of, 'not yet, I'm not quite ready for you,' I also get excited to welcome in the stuff of paintings and poems - the golden hour of the early mornings and the fading afternoons. Welcome rains bring back the greens of grasses and the turning of the leaves. John Muir, your words are living in my head!
As the days start to fade away faster and faster, I always get that feeling I need to grab every bit of sunshine and squeeze out every bit of daylight before November takes them both away. The focus on watching the transitions of the seasons play out pleasantly pulls me away from the dreaded list of seasonal to-do lists that are waiting for me to start as we anticipate the seasonal household flip! Before you know it, the yard will need to be readied for the coming colder weather. Deep cleaning is necessary to wipe away the effects of open windows and doors that served their purpose to cool away the heat of the day with the breeze of a cool night. The endless flow of footsteps from welcome guests and dogs coming and going between the day's activities; a thorough culinary wipe down and a pantry reorganization beckons from months of summer cookouts, picnic prep, potluck participation, and a general love of summer entertaining and eating.
And then there is the job of flipping closets and drawers from lightweight cotton and linens to wool and cashmere. Time to get those sweaters and coats back in rotation in anticipation of the demands of cooler weather ahead. Bye-bye sandals, hello boots and brogues. Yes, the activities of a full summer calendar have shown their wear and tear on this tiny little farmhouse, and it's time to ready ourselves for the merriment of winter expectations. Before you know it, we will be back on the road for our seasonal pop-ups in San Francisco and Seattle. Details to come! By the time we settle back home in December, winter will be ON, and so will we. Before we let summer slide behind us, take a moment to remember your favorite moments that happened this summer. Save them away so you can bring them back out on a crappy day! Until then, savor the last bits of this most wonderful month, September, and welcome Autumn with both arms open–and perhaps a new sweater!

COMING SOON AND NEW TO OUR LINEUP THIS AUTUMN: CLOSED DENIM.

For those of you with a long history with Baby & Company, you understand the impact and legacy that designers Marithé and François Girbaud had on the Baby & Co brand.
What most of you did not know was that Marithé and François started their first denim label: Closed in 1978. Soon after the brand had launched in Paris, Baby and Uri recognized the talent and excitement that these denim gurus were bringing to the market, and immediately knew they had to have it in their new Seattle boutique that had opened shortly before, in 1976.
And so started both the relationship and success of these innovative titans who’s design and influence are still felt today. Marithé & Françoise sold Closed, and went forward with the label that bore their names: Marithé & Françoise Girbaud.
The house of Girbaud became a global phenomena, and set the bar for streetwear brands right into the early 2000s.
It seemed like the right time to lean into our fashion roots and rediscover the legacy of Closed as a way to celebrate the ascension and duration of both of our companies, which have endured almost five decades of fashion, and style.
We are thrilled to bring it to you
