Seattle-based designer Suk Chai is easily in the top echelon of Pacific Northwest womenswear artisans. An industry veteran with a former 14-year stint as senior design director at Nordstrom, Chai grew up in Korea before moving to New York to attend FIT. While at school she won awards, climbed the ranks, and launched a career based on a beautiful expertise and vocabulary of luxury fabrics.
In the fall of 2014, Chai founded her debut line, dubbed Schai (pronounced shay). From then, each season she releases collections based on themes that stem from motifs of power, nature, femininity, and texture. The tailoring is immaculate, and the shapes are unexpected and modern. What's most exciting, however, are the textiles: rich cashmeres, hefty cottons, and Italian-sourced fabrics that blend sheer cutouts with midnight panels.
Spring/summer 2017, titled Monsoon, features cool blues and creamy whites in breezy, billowing styles. She keeps with the off-the-shoulder trend in tops that wouldn't be out of place on the Italian Riviera. Structural cargo skirts pair with oversized blouses.
